A Humble Servant Before Allah: A Prayer for Mercy

AI generated

Key Takeaways

  • Complete dependence upon Allah
  • Gratitude for countless blessings
  • Hope in Allah’s mercy
  • A good ending and eternal nearness to Allah

I am Your humble and helpless servant, and You are my Lord, the Possessor of boundless bounty. I am a creature, while You are the Creator; I am mortal, while You are Everlasting; I am entirely weakness and need, while You are absolutely Self-Sufficient and free of all need. My existence is Your gift, my life is Your trust, and every breath I take is indebted to Your command and decree.

Every particle of my being lies within the encompassing scope of Your knowledge and Your effective decree. Every beat of my heart is by Your permission, every breath by Your command, and every moment of life is sustained by Your boundless grace. I am not even the owner of my own existence; so, apart from You, whom could I regard as my Master and my Helper?

You subjected the air to my service so that I might breathe; when I became thirsty, You gave me flowing water; when hunger came upon me, You spread before me a table of blessings; when illness afflicted me, You provided the means of healing; when my heart became heavy with grief, You granted me comfort through Your mercy. I did not even ask, yet You continued to give; I remained heedless, yet You were never heedless of my condition.

I am sinful, while You are the Most Forgiving; I am broken, while You are the Restorer and the Almighty; I am helpless, while You are the One who takes care of all affairs. My deeds are deficient, my worship is insignificant, my slips are countless, and my shortcomings are beyond measure. If the matter were based upon what I deserve, I would be entirely deprived; but if the matter rests upon Your grace and generosity, then my hope is boundless.

Therefore, I do not come before the threshold of Your mercy carrying the capital of my deeds; rather, I come holding firmly to the hem of Your mercy.

May my brow of humble submission bow before no threshold except Yours; may my heart be enslaved to no one but You; and may the gaze of my hope turn in no direction but Yours. Bring my heart to life through Your remembrance, illuminate my inner being with the light of knowledge and recognition of You, and fill my soul with Your love. Make my life subject to Your pleasure, and keep every step I take firm upon the path of servitude to You.

When the message of death arrives and the journey of life begins to come to an end, keep the declaration of Your Oneness upon my lips, the light of certainty within my heart, and remembrance of You within my soul. Grant me a good ending upon faith. Turn the terror of the grave into intimacy through Your mercy, illuminate the darkness of the burial chamber with light, and fill the solitude of the earth with Your companionship.

On the Day of Resurrection, when the veil of the unseen is lifted and all creation stands in rows before You, conceal my shortcomings beneath the veil of Your forgiveness; adorn my record of deeds through Your grace; keep my feet firm upon the Bridge; and shelter me from the terror of Hell.

I am not deserving of Paradise; my worship is not its price, nor are my deeds its equivalent. Grant me Paradise without any claim of deserving it, solely through Your immense grace and magnificent generosity. Grant me the treasure of Your pleasure, bless me with the companionship of Your accepted servants, and bestow upon me the blessing of nearness to You—a blessing after which no desire for any other blessing remains.

Make me grateful for Your blessings, patient in times of trial, repentant for my sins, mindful of the Truth, and steadfast upon the path of servitude. My beginning is by Your command, my continued existence is by Your grace, and my end is a return to Your presence.

I am Your servant, and You are my Lord. My honour lies in servitude to You, my refuge lies in Your mercy, and my hope lies in Your grace.

You have honoured me; I am grateful to You.
