Nearly three months after Washington and Tehran reached an understanding aimed at containing the conflict, tensions between the United States and Iran are once again rising across several fronts, particularly around the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in a statement issued today: UKMTO has received a verified, time-late report of an incident occurring on the 16th September 2026, of a Tanker struck by an unknown projectile while transiting outbound of the Strait of Hormuz. Crew have been reported as safe. Damage assessment and environmental impact has not been reported. Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO, authorities are investigating.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted and detained the Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend, claiming that the vessel had attempted what Tehran described as an “illegal passage” through the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC said the tanker caught fire after being struck.
It remains unclear whether the tanker mentioned by the IRGC is the same vessel involved in the incident reported by UKMTO, and the Iranian account has not been independently verified.
The latest incident comes as U.S. President Donald Trump says he is approaching a critical decision over whether to resume major military attacks against Iran. Trump told Axios that he faces a “big decision” regarding the next phase of the conflict and said he intends to consult regional allies before deciding on the next steps.
The situation has also affected commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes. Preliminary shipping data showed that only four commodity vessels crossed the strait on Thursday, well below the 10-day average of 16 vessels.
The latest developments have raised fresh questions over whether the conflict could enter another phase of major military escalation or whether diplomatic efforts will prevent a wider confrontation.
